One of the most effective ways to implement a company-wide Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Program is to make it interactive and involve participants from all levels of the organization. This will create a sense of teamwork and foster an environment of understanding. Risks are inherent at all levels of an organization, hence the need for interaction and input from various team members throughout the business.
Workshops are a great way to get everyone involved, utilizing the small group sessions to facilitate meaningful dialogue that the participants can not only understand but also relate to. You will want to keep in mind that while most people understand risk, ERM can be a relatively new concept, so it will be fundamental to keep it simple.
An integral part of the workshop is the preparation for all those involved. One of the ways we suggest to prepare is by distributing a survey prior to the workshop as this has two benefits. First it will provide an avenue for the participants to begin the identification process of the risks in their specific day to day activities. Secondly it will allow you, as the ERM Champion, to gauge the participants’ level of understanding of ERM in order to structure the workshop accordingly.
