Staying Safe This Halloween: Risk Awareness for the Whole Family
Halloween is one of the most exciting times of the year for kids — and for many of us here at The ALS Group, it’s a time to participate in the fun with our own children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and neighbors. But with all the costumes, candy, and celebrations, it’s also a night filled with risks that can easily catch families off guard.
Being proactive with little ones can be challenging — kids love to surprise us with their boundless energy and spontaneity! But a bit of preparation can make all the difference in keeping everyone safe and ensuring the evening is full of great memories instead of unwanted surprises.
Risks to Watch Out For
As risk professionals, we know that awareness is the first step in prevention. Some of the most common risks associated with Halloween include:
• Pedestrian Safety: The excitement of trick-or-treating often leads to distractions and reduced visibility after dark. In fact, pedestrian fatalities increase by 43% on Halloween.
• Allergic Reactions: Kids receive candy from many sources, and ingredients aren’t always clear. Food allergies are a growing concern and require extra vigilance.
• Choking Hazards: Small candies and toys can pose choking risks for younger children.
• Pumpkin Carving Injuries: What starts as a fun family tradition can quickly turn dangerous without proper tools or supervision.
Tips to Mitigate the Risks
A few small steps can help make Halloween safer for everyone:
• Light the way: Give kids flashlights or glow sticks to increase visibility while trick-or-treating.
• Inspect treats: Check candy and snacks thoroughly before and during the festivities.
• Stay involved: Supervision remains the best form of protection — be present and engaged as kids explore.
Celebrating Safely at The ALS Group
This year, Halloween 2025 falls on a Friday, and to support our team’s family time and community involvement, The ALS Group offices will close at 2:00 PM. We want our employees to enjoy the holiday with their loved ones — no PTO required — while staying alert to potential risks both at home and in their neighborhoods.
From all of us at The ALS Group, we wish you and your families a safe, fun, and memorable Halloween!
